His hawkish stance on the Palestinians and Iran have made him popular with the right but a divisive figure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yitzhak Herzog:<\/strong> The co-leader of the centre-left Zionist Union electoral alliance, Mr Herzog has accused Likud of depressing Israeli living standards and campaigned against Mr Netanyahu&#8217;s foreign policy. He has tried to counter Mr Netanyahu&#8217;s accusations he is &#8220;soft&#8221; by pointing to his special forces background.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tzipi Livni:<\/strong> Mr Herzog&#8217;s co-leader in the Zionist Union, Ms Livni is a prominent advocate of seeking more cooperation with the Palestinian Authority.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moshe Kahlon: <\/strong>A former Likud welfare and communications minister under Benjamin Netanyahu, Mr Kahlon&#8217;s centre-right Kulanu party could play kingmaker in a coalition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"caption body-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/75306000\/jpg\/_75306515_line976.jpg\" alt=\"line\" width=\"464\" height=\"2\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Opinion polls published before the weekend suggest that the centre-left Zionist Union is likely to win the most seats.<\/p>\n<p>However, the BBC&#8217;s Kevin Connolly in Jerusalem says that it might still be possible for Mr Netanyahu to form a coalition government even if his Likud party fails to top the poll.<\/p>\n<p>No party has ever won an outright majority in Israel&#8217;s election, meaning it has always been governed by a coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the focus of the campaign has been on international issues, from Israel&#8217;s relationship with the United States to concerns over Iran&#8217;s nuclear programme.<\/p>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/81692000\/jpg\/_81692337_026340361-1.jpg\" alt=\"Israelis attend a right-wing rally in Tel Aviv&quot;s Rabin Square March 15, 2015.\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\">Right-wing supporters have been rallying but it is the centre-left that is expected to win most seats<\/div>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/news.bbcimg.co.uk\/media\/images\/81692000\/jpg\/_81692339_026339947-1.jpg\" alt=\"People bring posters of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prior to his election rally in Tel Aviv, Israel\" width=\"624\" height=\"351\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"caption full-width\">Analysts have described the election as a vote on the record of Mr Netanyahu<\/div>\n<p>But many of the candidates have concentrated on socio-economic problems in Israel, including the high cost of living and slow economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>The future of the city of Jerusalem has been a central election issue.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Netanyahu has consistently accused his centre-left challengers of being willing to relinquish Israel&#8217;s claim to Jerusalem as its indivisible capital in peace talks with the Palestinians.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Mr Netanyahu spoke at the Har Homa Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem and said he was the only person who could ensure the city&#8217;s security.<\/p>\n<p>He said no Palestinian state would be formed were he to remain prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>Palestinians seek East Jerusalem &#8211; occupied by Israel since the 1967 Middle East war &#8211; as the capital of a future Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>But Zionist Union party co-leader Yitzhak Herzog has accused Mr Netanyahu of &#8220;panicking&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Visiting the Western Wall, one of the holiest sites in Judaism, on Sunday, he pledged to &#8220;safeguard Jerusalem and its residents in actions, not just words, more than any other leader&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Source: BBC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Polls have opened in Israel in what is expected to be a close contest between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu&#8217;s party and a centre-left alliance.
