Liverpool play Manchester City in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

Matip’s injury comes after fellow defender Joe Gomez suffered an ankle injury playing for England during the international break.

Midfielder Adam Lallana also suffered an injury against Palace which manager Jurgen Klopp described as “serious”.

The 56-year-old was appointed on 29 November after the Baggies sacked Tony Pulis following a run of 10 Premier League games without a victory.

A 2-1 home defeat by Burnley on Saturday left bottom club Albion 10 points from safety with six games left.

Coach Darren Moore has taken over the first-team and is likely to stay in charge for the rest of the season.

Pardew has become the 10th permanent manager in the Premier League to leave his post this season, which is a joint record along with the 2013-14 campaign.

The Baggies’ statement read: “West Bromwich Albion and Alan Pardew have agreed to mutually part company following discussions between both parties.

“Assistant head coach John Carver will also be leaving.

“The club would like to thank Alan and John for their efforts and wish them well in their future endeavours.”

Pardew, a former team-mate of West Brom technical director Nick Hammond, was the club’s sixth manager since 2011.

West Brom won just once in 18 league games under him, taking only eight points from a possible 54.

They are in their eighth successive Premier League season but have taken only 20 points from their 32 matches this campaign.

Pardew’s previous job in the Premier League was with Crystal Palace, who sacked him in December 2016 with the club 17th in the table.

The Real Madrid playmaker has seen his club football limited in spells under Zidane this season.

However, Isco produced a superb display against Argentina, whose captain Lionel Messi again watched from the stands at the Wanda Metropolitano because of fitness concerns.

Spain had drawn 1-1 against Germany last week and have now extended their unbeaten run under coach Julen Lopetegui to 18 matches.

“In Madrid, I don’t have the confidence a player needs, ” Isco said in a post-match interview, as quoted by Marca.

“The matches with the national team give me life. Here, I have the confidence of the coach.

“I want to show that I’m a good player. Lopetegui shows me confidence with the minutes he gives me.

“Maybe I’m the problem in Madrid. I don’t know how to win Zidane’s confidence.”

After Gonzalo Higuain shot wide early on, Diego Costa fired Spain ahead in the 13th minute, before Isco struck either side of a header from Argentina defender Nicolas Otamendi.

Thiago Alcantara added a fourth, with substitute Iago Aspas also on the scoresheet before Isco netted his third with 16 minutes left.

“Despite the result, this match wasn’t easy,” Isco added. “They made things difficult for us, they were very aggressive.

“We mustn’t forget that this is part of our preparation for the World Cup. The victory can give us a lot.”

Hearts were outclassed and easily dispatched by the Miners, in what was their first game at their adopted home ground in Cape Coast.

The Phobians looked flat and disjointed for large periods of the game and were lucky not to have conceded more goals.

Wellington has however blamed his side’s humbling defeat at the hands of the Obuasi based side on individual errors.

“The tactics were not the problem, it was mistakes. Tactically we were better than AshGold on the field,” he said.

“The hardly attacked us as we kept them at bay for most parts of the game. They scored the goals from the few attacks the made; we didn’t lose because of bad tactics.”

Hearts are now second from bottom with just a point from their opening two games.

He has just over two years left on his contract at the Etihad and says he wants to head back to his first club when his time is up in Manchester.

Speaking to Fox Sports Argentina, he said: “I always said that I would like to return to Independiente when my contract ends with City, which is in 2020. I am not thinking about that now. I am focused on finishing the season well and reaching the World Cup.”

The 68-year-old has faced calls to leave the Gunners – who face Stoke on Sunday – after their failure to qualify for the Champions League last season, as well as their 14-year wait to win another Premier League title.

But Wenger believes a lack of success on the pitch may not be the only factor in the criticism coming his way, telling BeIN Sport: “When you age, you focus on doing well for your club and ignore all the rest. The older you get, the more it becomes age discrimination.

“I accept if the results are not good enough then you have to take the consequences. But overall that perpetual thing of how long you have been at a club, how old you are, I find that a bit difficult to take.

“But all the rest I have to accept because I am in a public job and have to make results and I accept I will be judged on results.”

Wenger has won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups during his 22 years with Arsenal and believes that, when he does finally leave the Emirates, the club’s fans will remember him for what he did for the club.

He said: “I am maybe naive enough to believe that with the time going on, with perspective and context what will stand out is what I have done for my club and not so much the result of the last game or how much I will be applauded when I stop one day.

“I’m a little bit fed up of all that modern thing about completely taking care of image. I’ve always worked my whole life with the idea of who you are rather than how you look so I’m not too concerned about that.”

Former Black Starlets players, Aminu Mohammed and Richard Danso got the first two goals of the match with Charles Boateng getting the third after he came on as a sub. Bright Andoh got the consolation for Liberty in injury time.

In Kumasi, Asante Kotoko went two games unbeaten in the season with a 1-0 win over Inter Allies. Obed Owusu found the net in the second half but the Reds needed Felix Annan several times to keep Allies from getting the equaliser.

The clash of the new boys between Karela FC and Techiman Eleven Wonders ended in a 1-1 draw. William Opoku Mensah scored for Karela while Abdul Wahab scored for Wonders.

Defending champions, Aduana Stars, got their season going with a goalless draw at Elmina Sharks. Despite arriving in Ghana on Friday from their CAF Champions League exertions, Aduana managed to play a large part of game on the front foot but they could not find the victory.

Bechem United enjoyed a 2-0 home win over Medeama thanks to strikes from Seth Sowah and Emmanuel Owusu.

Berekum Chelsea needed Stephen Amankona to score with the kick of the match to get them a 1-1 home draw with Dreams FC.

The visitors had scored through Samuel Pimpong in the second half and looked set for a victory that would have snapped Berekum Chelsea’s home run of 22 matches unbeaten but Amankona pushed that run to 23 matches without a loss with his goal.

Wa All Stars and Ebusua Dwarfs played out a goalless draw at Wa.

On Saturday, AshGold went to the top of the league table with a 3-1 win over Hearts of Oak at Cape Coast.

After a tame first half, Liverpool forward Salah backed up his impressive four-goal performance against Watford on Saturday with a smart finish to give Egypt the lead.

With the clock ticking down and with victory for Egypt in sight, Portugal’s captain equalised and then sealed the win with two powerful headers in the dying minutes.

Next up for Portugal is the Netherlands – who fell to defeat against England on Friday evening – while Egypt face Greece.

After a goalless first half, Miranda opened the scoring at the Luzhniki Stadium, which will host seven matches at this summer’s tournament including the final.

Philippe Coutinho scored a penalty for Brazil’s second before Paulinho headed in a third from close range.

Five-time world champions Brazil are now unbeaten in eight games.

They showed no sign of missing Paris St-Germain forward Neymar, who faces a race against time to be fit for this summer’s tournament after undergoing surgery on an injured right foot.

Brazil dominated the first half but it wasn’t until after the break that they broke the deadlock, when Inter Milan defender Miranda slotted home a rebound after Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev made a good save.

Paulinho was pulled down in the penalty area by Aleksandr Golovin, with Barcelona team-mate Coutinho coolly scoring the spot-kick for his ninth international goal.

Midfielder Paulinho then found himself unmarked to head home Willian’s cross.

Brazil’s next friendly is against Germany on Tuesday in Berlin, while Russia face France in St Petersburg.
