The Ministry of Water Resources Works and Housing is working on a policy that will ensure that landlords charge not more than one month rent advance.
The policy when approved will also review the mortgage regime and also make it impossible for landlords to vary rent contracts to the disadvantage of tenants.
In an interview with an Accra based Joy FM, Mr. Sampson Ahi, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, works and Housing said ”Ghana has no specific regulatory body to regulate the housing needs of the people, the sector has become a free for all operation”.
”That is what the housing policy is seeking to address,” he noted.
According to him the policy will be difficult to implement and will require the support of all Ghanaians to ensure its success .
He said even though the rent act prevents landlords from taking more than six months rent advance, they do contrary which has been totally ignored.
Mr. Ahi stated that the Ministry has developed and proposed a workable solution to the issue which is before Cabinet for approval now.
”Let all of us come together and then once Cabinet approves it, let’s take it up as our personal agenda and then push it,” he opined.
