The GCB bank has commiserated with the family of the driver of its bullion van, David Sarpong, who was shot and killed during a failed robbery attack on the van.
In a statement issued by the bank, its Managing Director, Ernest Agbesi, said the board and staff were deeply saddened by the tragic incident.
[contextly_sidebar id=”qQKLELiLDYOpYpLvUs3Lfk2gGFJGu8V1″]It said the bank has pledged to work closely with the Delta Security Services Ltd to offer the needed support to the family.
“Despite the inherent challenges in the delivery of banking services across the country, GCB will continue to offer banking services in all parts of the country in support of national development,” the statement said.
Background
Some suspected robbers, who are police officers, attempted to rob a GCB bullion van at Afram Plains in the Eastern Region.
The attempted robbery led to the death of the driver of the van after a heated exchange of gunfire between a police officer who was escorting the van and the suspects.
Although the officers were arrested and were being conveyed to Koforidua, the Regional Police command, they managed to escape to neighboring towns.
However, over 500 residents of Donkorkrom and Tease, attacked and set ablaze some Police facilities in those areas in protest against the escape of the suspects.
The two suspects were later re-captured at their hideouts and sent to the National Police headquarters in Accra.
