Research conducted by the Catholic Relief Service (CRS), a Christian based non-profit making organization has revealed the highest records of girls absenteeism in school during menstruation.
The CRS in collaboration with the University for Development Studies (UDS), conducted the research to establish the peak period of girls absenteeism in school.

The two institutions as well as the Desert Research Institute (DRI), officially launched the research findings in Tamale.
The CRS country representative, Kris H. Ozar, explained that the research intended to uncover the reason behind the menace since girl-child education is poor especially in the Northern Regions.
He said the comprehensive report will serve as a blueprint for stakeholders in the education sector to reduce or possibly combat the threat to girl child education.
He added that, the report sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the CRIS project christened “I Shine menstrual hygiene management component.
The Northern Regional Minister, Abdullah Abubakari, a social development expert, commended the CRS and its collaborators for the painstaking research report.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment solve the problem and mentioned the distribution of free sanitary pads to female students as evidence.
Abdullah Abubakari admitted that, the situation required a multifaceted approach to tackle, and maintained that the CRS report could not be underestimated.
Northern Regional Coordinator of the School Health Education Programme (SHEP), called for the expansion of facilities needed in schools to comfort female students during mensuration.
Madam Benedict Kafari laid emphasis on rural schools where sex education is lacking.
