It was all joy at the Achimota Basic School on Saturday as pupils, parents and teachers turned up to mark the school’s first Speech and Prize Giving Day ceremony.
The event, which was sponsored by the 1985 year group of the school was massively patronised as hundreds of people turned up at the venue to witness it.
The event featured both cutural and choral performances by the pupils as well as a good show by the school cadets.
The headmistress of the school, Edith Kyeremanteng extolled the achievements of the school in recent years whic included major successes in the academic and sporting fields.
According to her, the school placed first in the league table for the 2015 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and is well placed to repeat the feat this year.
The school also finished first in the District’s French competition, while the boys football team also won the interschools competition.
However, she expressed her concern at the number of classrooms available at the school which she said were not sufficient enough to cater for the schools population of 2,602.
She also spoke of the school’s need for a dining and assembly hall as the students had been forced to eat under tents.
The guest speaker at the event who was also a student of the school, Audrey Gadzepko advised the students to be confident and have faith in themselves.
According to her, “teachers are expected to take the lead by creating the right environment for learning.”
“Teachers have to shift focus from themselves to students in a learner-centered society. Teach children to be problem solvers…stimulate the children’s creativity and passion for knowledge,” she added.
