The incumbent Member of Parliament for Manhyia North in the Ashanti Region, Collins Owusu Amankwah, has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primary to battle for the seat in November 2016.

He polled 185 votes as against his closest contender, Kwasi Konadu, who garnered 171 votes, while Nana Osei Bamfoe had 129 votes.

[contextly_sidebar id=”YQIKHCHIXVR2JS3ivVq7gRDt0m9EvTkN”]The primary had to be postponed several times after Mr. Owusu Amankwah, and Nana Osei Bamfoe, questioned the credibility of the register, claiming among others that it was bloated.

The constituency is the only one in the region that has not yet elected a parliamentary candidate for the party due to alleged irregularities.

Violence at primary

The election was earlier marred by altercations over the eligibility of some voters.

Citi FM’s Lauretta Timah, who was on the ground, reported that a warning shot had to be fired by Police to prevent some people from whisking ballot boxes away.

Three persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident.

Superintendent James Annor confirmed that some members of party had issues with the eligibility of some of the delegates.
