The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi, Kojo Bonsu, has debunked claims that shops at the yet-t0-be completed Kejetia Market are being sold at exorbitant prices.
Some assembly members had alleged that Mr. Bonsu has unilaterally increased prices of the shops from an initially agreed price of Ghc1,500 to Ghc 25,000 each, and thus called for his resignation.
Speaking at a news conference, some assembly members, led by Mr. Kofi Senya, the immediate past presiding member, alleged that the MCE had sold out shops in the yet-to-be-completed Kejetia market to about 2,000 traders.
The Kumasi MCE, in his bid to set the records straight, took the market Queens to the Kejetia-Central market project site to see the progress of the work.
He explained his actions saying, “We‘re here because, I got a message from the market queens that they have heard this rumor in town, that people are paying some outrageous amounts and 2000 shops have being built and are being allocated, so they wanted to come and acquaint themselves with the state of affairs. So when they came, they came here to see if there are 2,000 shops and also to verify if monies have been collected.”
The Mayor in response to the rumors, said “it is total falsehood. Nothing like that has happened. It is just something they are just peddling around, which is not true.”
Mr. Bonsu further charged traders who claim they have paid monies to certain individuals to own up.
“Anybody who has paid Gh25,000 to any individual should come forward because the monies are not going to be paid to people, it will be paid to the Bank. So if anybody has paid that money, he or she should come out for us to know so that the people will be arrested and the law will deal with them,” he stated.
