Velvet-voiced Irene Logan was nominated in the Best Female Vocalist of the Year category, for her song Me Do Wo in this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, which came off last Saturday.
However, Lynx Entertainment’s MzVee was crowned as Ghana’s Best Female Vocalist, at the VGMAs 2016 .
Irene, a talented singer/songwriter, was nominated under the Best Female Vocalist Category in the 2007 Ghana Music Awards, but she lost the honour of a win to Christiana Love.
In a series of Tweets, after the verdict on Saturday night, Irene appeared to be venting her frustration over the fact that the coveted award had eluded her once again.
“I just realised something very important in this industry”
“Value is non existent”
“It’s kind of a waste of time to be nominated over and over for a category that has so little respect”
“Winning or not winning doesn’t change much in my life .but for the sake of the spirit of great voices @CharterhouseGH its blasphemy”
The Ghana-based Liberian Afrosoul/Afropop sensation had teamed up with the celebrated Efya, forming the duo, “Irene and Jane”, to win Charterhouse’s Stars of the Future talent show in 2006.
Over the past few years, there has been so much speculation surrounding the possible reasons why Efya has been catapulted to fairly higher heights in her music career, after each of the divas decided to pursue solo careers and many people have asserted that Irene is a better vocalist than many of the female singers that Ghana has seen in recent times.
But if that is the case, what exactly is hindering Irene’s progress within the Ghanaian music industry? I would go ahead and say that if our music industry were actually as functional as it ought to be, then acts such as Irene Logan should be soaring, because she would have had access to the right songwriters, the perfect producers, who would have understood her unique strengths and a holistic management team that would transform the songstress into a shooting star.
Or, perhaps, could it be that the politics within the industry is not working in Irene’s favour?
And yet, having said this, one can’t help but wonder if Irene might need to take a few steps backwards, re-assess her strengths, rally a new and innovative team to build, to sustain and to project her brand and then take another shot at winning something at the VGMAs.
