Terrorists are plotting to unleash attacks within countries in the West African sub-region, the National Security Council has said.
The Council said based on intelligence from other agencies, it has every reason to believe that countries including Ghana is at risk.
[contextly_sidebar id=”oO6b8TIMHa5TfIt8L8kFZ38H6EL5zxrg”]“The National Security Council on the basis of briefings by the intelligence agencies and partners, has determined that there is a credible terrorists threat to all countries in the sub-region,” a statement issued by the Communications Ministry added.
The information according to the statement, was made known during a security review meeting chaired by President John Dramani Mahama and attended by Security Chiefs on Tuesday.
The meeting follows the surge in terrorist attacks in the sub-region in recent times.
The Council reviewed the recent attacks in Mali, Burkina Faso and recently Cote d’Ivoire.
The Council also reviewed its anti-terrorism preparedness, joint services operations and other measures to ensure the safety of the citizenry.
“In view of the conventional wisdom that security is a shared responsibility, the Council has advised that the general public be vigilant, cautious and curious, and report any unusual circumstances to the law enforcement agencies,” the statement added.
The National Security Council further urged Ghanaians and other nationals resident in Ghana to bear with security measures that may be enforced at various locations from time to time for the purpose of public safety adding that “the Council will review the situation on a continuous basis.”
Terror attacks on Ivory Coast
In Ivory Coast, heavily armed gunmen opened fire last Sunday at a hotel in the country’s beach resort of Grand-Bassam.
According to the AFP, the assailants, who were “heavily armed and wearing balaclavas, fired at guests at the L’Etoile du Sud (Southern Star), a large hotel which was full of expats.
At least 16 people were killed in the attacks.
