Pencils of Promise (PoP), a Non-governmental organization (NGO) committed to improving quality education has made giant strides by removing over 60 schools under trees in 19 districts of the Volta Region during 2014/2015 academic year.
The feat confirms the organization’s drive to ensure pupils have access to quality learning environments. The schools which mostly lack basic infrastructure and amenities were also provided ancillary facilities such as offices, furniture, water filters and sanitary facilities.
This was made known at the annual review and stakeholder meeting held in Ho.
PoP has built 62 schools while works are ongoing on seven (7) others. The beneficiary schools include Adaklu, Wudome Salvation Army, Bakpe D/A basic, Hohoe Presby and Atanve Basic school.
Speaking to Citi News, the Country Director of POP, Mr. Freeman Gobah, said the facilities with support from the community and district Assemblies were built at a cost of GHC 7,686,450.97.
Support for teachers
He added that besides the provision of infrastructure to schools, the organization has also been schooling some teachers in the region on innovative and interactive teaching methods to enhance their capacity.
“About 142 teachers, Heads and circuit supervisors have been trained so far to serve about 1,483 pupils as part of our Teacher Support program. E-Readers and other support materials are being provided to both teachers and pupils to improve literacy rates in schools.”
Speaking on behalf of the Volta Regional Director of GES, Mr. Albert Amenuve commended Pencils of Promise and urged all stakeholders to collaborate to improve quality education in the country.
