60,000 more households to benefit from LEAP

The Ministry of Gender, children and social protection has revealed plans of adding more households to the LEAP program nationwide.

The ministry according to Nana Oye Lithur is undertaking an exercise to add 60,000 more households to the current 90,000 households.

Nana Oye Lithur, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection made this revelation during her visit to the Asokore Mampong municipality to donate relief items to flood victims.

“8,628 households in Ashanti are currently on the LEAP program. An amount of 522,462 Ghana Cedis is paid to these households during every cycle of payment. The ministry is undertaking a targeting exercise to select 60,000 more beneficiaries to add up to the current 90,000 beneficiary households. 5656 households in Ashanti will be added to the current number of beneficiaries.”

She further revealed that an emergency LEAP intervention programme has been set up to “help ease the pain”of all flood affected victims including the 1,486 persons in the Ashanti region.

“We set up the emergency LEAP intervention programme, under which 3.9 million Ghana cedis would be given to victims within a three month period. 100 Ghana cedis would be given to each household of about 13000 total affected households. I am glad to announce that data collection is almost completed and payment to beneficiaries will soon begin.”

The 250 victims each received a mattress, a blanket, a bag of rice, a gallon of cooking oil and a can of tomato paste.

Some residents in the Asawasi and Aboabo communities were displaced by recent flooding in the area.
