Celebrated highlife artiste, Paapa Yankson has passed away.

Confirming his death to Citi News, Paapa Yankson’s eldest son, Silas Yankson said his father died at 9am on Friday, July 21, 2017 in the presence of his wife at home.

“Just this morning at exactly 9am am my mum called me and told me he had passed on. He died in the presence of our mother. She called me and told me to take heart.”

Silas failed to state what his father was specifically battling with but just stated that, “he was ill for some time… He was not well…”

Paapa Yankson, despite being constrained in movement and confined in a wheel chair due for health reasons, occasionally mounted music stages to thrill his audience to his timeless songs.

Among the stages he mounted recently to perform was Citi FM‘s Music of Ghanaian Origin (MOGO) event which was held in March.

Born on June 22, 1944 at Winneba in the Central Region, Paapa Yankson rose to fame with his many hit songs in the 1980s.

He has over 15 albums to his credit and has received many national and international awards.

In 1997, his composition, ‘Yaaba’ won an award for Best Composition during the Komkomba Awards. His works, ‘Wiase Mu Nsem’, ‘Show Your Love’, ‘Wo Yere Anaa Wo Maame’, and ‘Tena Menkyen’ are among his hit songs.

Paapa Yankson’s musical influence extends beyond Ghana to countries including US, Canada, Belgium, Britain, Germany, Holland, Nigeria, Benin and Ivory Coast.
