The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), has disbursed GH¢ 102,050 to 112 People With Disability (PLWD) as part of its social responsibilities in Accra.
Among the beneficiaries are visually and hearing impaired individuals, physically challenged, cerebral palsy sufferers, albinos and epilepsy patients.
Nii Adjebu Lamptey, Chairman of the Disability Sub-Committee of the AMA, who made the donation, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the selection was based strictly on the extent of poverty and deprivation facing the applicants.
He said each of the PWD identified in the Metropolis by the Assembly received between GH¢ 1,000 to GH¢ 1,500 to improve their income.
He said the AMA would continue to assist PWDs who have established medium scale enterprises as well as cooperative groups.
Nii Lamptey urged the beneficiaries to use the money to improve their lives.
Mr. Thomas Mustapha Ashong, Presiding Member of the AMA, said the AMA would embark on a monitoring exercise to ensure that the funds are used for their stated purpose, and urged the beneficiaries to invest the seed money given them.
