The Parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Ledzokuku constituency, Dr. Okoe Boye organised a free medical screening for the residents of the constituency over the weekend; the ninth such exercise.
The exercise saw hundreds of people check their health statuses and get treatment for minor conditions.
According to Dr. Boye despite several other challenges that exist in the constituency, the health of his constituents remained paramount hence his decision to organise the screening.
He told Citi News Philip Nii Lartey in an exclusive interview: “My prime interest as someone who wants to be a Member of Parliament for this community is to help develop the community. I want to make sure that we make progress in all fields; in the area of sanitation, education, health and all the things that will make life better. To build a community, you need to work with the constituents. It is important that the people of Ledzokuku or Teshie, where I’m aspiring to be MP, are healthy. Once they have health then all other things can be looked at.”
The aspirant, who is a certified medical doctor organised a similar exercise back in February stated that he was only doing his duty as health practitioner.
“As a medical doctor it is natural that I try to make sure that I check on their health status to screen them. Most adults have issues with high blood pressure so we are trying to check that and advise them on healthy living.
“We are also screening for diabetes and treating general illnesses. People are coming with worm infestations which we have drugs for. We also have an eye attendant who screens for common conditions like cataracts, poor vision due to old age. Sometimes we give them glasses for free. It’s all intended to get to know the constituents in the process and also get to improve on their health.”
Dr. Boye added that he had solicited the help of the hospital he had worked at for health practitioners who would supervise the screening exercise.
“I’ve worked in a lot of hospitals. My last station before coming to Accra was in the government hospital at Kibi so I brought most of the doctors from the Eastern Region. I have two doctors from La General Hospital, 3 doctors from the Eastern Region and some laboratory technicians. ”
