The incumbent Member of Parliament for the Klottey Korle constituency, Nii Armah Ashitey, has denied reports that he is preparing to contest this year’s parliamentary elections in the area on an independent ticket.
Mr. Ashitey has been forced to address rumors he may go independent in this year’s election following the emergence of campaign posters carrying his portrait and implying he would run on an independent ticket this year.
“Nii Armah Ashitey has told me categorically he has nothing to do with the posters circulating,” his Spokesperson, Kester Abura Kurankye, disclosed to Citi News.According to him, “the posters are coming from…detractors.”
He added that “Nii Armah Ashitey is not aware of where the posters are coming from. He has not authorised anybody to print posters for him at this point.”
Mr. Ashitey contested and lost the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary in Klottey Korle to Dr. Zanetor Rawlings.
He subsequently went to court to challenge the eligibility of Dr. Zanetor because she was not a registered voter when she was elected as a nominee praying the court to declare her election null and void, an action he insisted was in the party’s interest.
But the Supreme Court cleared Zanetor to contest after she registered onto the electoral roll when the Electoral Commission opened up for registration.
Mr. Ashitey’s office is however still holding out on hope that the legal means they pursued will bear fruit despite the ruling.
According to his spokesperson, “we are still in court. The Supreme Court has directed all of us to go back to the High Court. So we are still on the case in the court. We are batting it legally and we will not take another measure since we have not concluded on the court issue.”
