The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested over 70 suspected robbers in a swoop while two others were gunned down in a shootout.
At least 34 of the suspects were detained following a raid by the police on their hideouts in and around the region.
Addressing the press on Tuesday morning, the deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander ACP Ampofo Duku said the police have been pursuing the two robbers, Emmanuel Nyamekye and Kojo Asare, nicknamed ’50 Cent’ and ‘Lumba respectively,’ for years.
According to him, the two were part of a five-man gang who robbed some taxi drivers at the Asuoyeboah SSNIT flats and guests at the Rees hotel both in Kumasi.
Two other members of the gang have been arrested while police have begun a manhunt for the other who is currently on the run.
“At about 9:30 in the evening four young men wielding guns laid ambush as the entrance of the house of their victim Nasiru at Asokore Mampong and attacked him immediately he entered his house. They demanded his bag which he resisted in releasing to them. They shot him in the palm and succeeded in snatching the bag from him which contained 35, 000 cedis. Intelligence later revealed that the robbery was conducted by wanted men, Emmanuel Nyamekye alias 50 cent, Kojo Asare alias Lumba, Yaw Gyimah alias Scorpion and Isaac Ofosuhene,” ACP Ampofo Duku said.
“Police intelligence later identified and arrested Yaw Gyimah and led the police to arrest Ofosuhene. Upon interrogation, the two stated that they had planned with ’50 cent’, ‘Lumba’ and other who is at large to rob Resse Hotel near the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. The two deceased persons were lured to Asafo cement. When police attempted to arrest them, they nearly shot one of the policemen and when police returned fire, it resulted in the death of 50 cent and Lumba. The other suspects have been detained to assist in investigations.”
The suspects are currently being questioned by the police.
