A group of teachers in the Upper East Region are threatening a demonstration against the Regional Directorate of Education for delays in their promotion.
The teachers, who completed a sandwich and distance learning course in basic education in 2015, say the Regional Educational Directorate has refused to upgrade them to the rank of principal superintendent professional.

Spokesperson for the group, Songoti Awefoge Emmanuel, said several efforts to get the regional directorate of education to get them upgraded have proved futile.
“We applied to the regional directorate to be upgraded to the rank of principal superintendent professional but the directorate on its part decided to prepare upgrading letters to teachers who had completed their diploma training in 2010 and behind, but refused upgrading the 2015 group who completed degree in Basic education through sandwich and distance learning.”
“When we contacted the directorate, we were referred to a letter with new directives on new processes for upgrading teachers who completed their training by sandwich and distance with effect from 2015/2016 academic year by which time we had completed our training and waiting graduation. So we don’t see why and how the new policy will affect our batch? All our colleagues in all the other regions have either been upgraded or going through the process successfully and we don’t know why in the case of the Upper East Region it’s an exception.” Mr. Songoti noted.
He said, the group is appealing to the directorate to act swiftly in commencing processes for their upgrade or face their wrath.
Expressing their frustrations to Citi News, one of the affected teachers said, “we are psychologically very worried that our colleagues in other regions completed the same year and have be upgraded but they are refusing to upgrade us.”
Another teacher said, “we know there are ten regions in Ghana and apart from Upper East Region, all the other regions are upgrading their teachers so why us?”
“The most painful thing is that, the year the directorate is expecting to upgrade us our colleagues will again be upgraded ahead of us, not because of their academic qualifications but due to a personal interest of the director of the Regional Education directorate,” the teacher added.
Meanwhile, a Deputy Director in-charge of Human Resource, Mr. Cletus Atuk, when contacted, declined to speak on the matter, adding that the Regional Director of Education, Sabina Obeng, is the one to speak to the issue but was out of town.
