This is how electricity should work in Ghana.
1. Allow multiple sources of Power Generation with 90% Renewable.
2. Multiple companies distributing power lines on behalf of Government(since it is the duty of the state to provide electricity).
3. Electricity pricing per kw should be done by Energy commission.
4. Metering provision, installation and calibration should be done my Ministry of Energy with offices in every single District.
With such a system a customer walks into Ministry of Energy’s office and produce the necessary document to acquire a meter (which is fully tested and calibrated as per energy commissions charges for both renewable energy sources and others). The customer then further select the energy provider in the same office after which a payment is made(Actually we should not even pay for meters and electric polls since it is a service with monthly charge). Appropriate time is schedule for installation to take place.
Every pre-paid receipt should contain amount paid, kilowatts used and charge per kilowatts.
If there is a metering problem you know it will properly be dealt with as against the current situation where ECG who is a distributor is also a seller of power and meter.
If they sign a power purchasing agreement with a producer regardless the cost of it and all their inefficiencies, they will pass it on to the customer either by paying for polls, meter or forging the meter to read more than what the regulator stipulate.
So amidst all the anger, this is my solution.
By the way, why is government still not taking solar and wind energy serious enough to give us cheaper electricity which will intend compel manufactures and other companies to expand and hire more people and government getting taxes on these workers? There is no way this country will grow with such high electricity charges. We can generate much more electricity than we need with solar alone within two years and no one should give excuse about storage because there are so much storage solution available today than before.
So Mr President, what is the problem?
