The Nurses and Midwifery Council has said it will sanction the principal of the Nursing and Midwifery Training School at Asante Mampong in the Ashanti Region, over her refusal to allow three students to sit for the upcoming licensing exams because they were pregnant.
The council and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), have ordered the school to allow the students to participate in the exams, but the students claim they are yet to be contacted.
The Registrar of the Nurses and Midwifery Council, Felix Nyantey, who spoke to Citi News, revealed that the council “has decided that the board will bring her [the principal] to book.”
Council ready to register the three nurses
The Council has said already that it is willing to see to the registration of the three students to write the exams.
This was after CHRAJ ordered the Council to register all affected pregnant students in the upcoming external licensing examination in August.
The Head of Public Relations at the Nurses and Midwifery Council, Nana Boateng Agyeman, clarified that the Council has no policy barring pregnant students from partaking in the external licensing examinations.
