The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leaders have elected Liberian president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, as their chairperson.
This was announced at the 49th ECOWAS heads of state meeting which opened in Dakar, Senagal today [Saturday].
She replaces Senegalese President, Macky Sall whose tenure comes to a close after he assumed the mantle from President John Mahama in 2015
President Johnson Sirleaf’s tenure will run for 12 months.
Following the announcement, she pledged to work towards achieving the objectives of the regional community’s vision 2020.
She however noted that there is a lot more to be done if that vision is to be achieved.
