The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuijie has assured Ghanaians that the June 3 disaster will never occur again.
About 150 people lost their lives on June 3, 2015 in floods caused by torrential rain, coupled with an explosion at the Goil Fuel Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
[contextly_sidebar id=”trGeuwlPxIAKHoxTjhnzaQUF7sskOfnU”]Speaking at a press forum held in Accra today, Mr. Vanderpuijie said the commitment by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to complete the disilting of the Korle lagoon and create more drainage around Accra is on track.
He added that Accra was now better than it was before the June 3 flood and fire disaster and assured Ghanaians of more improvement in terms of drainage and filth management.
“The commitment to make sure that we remove all obstacles, distill and dredge the Korle and the Odaw to ensure free water flow will continue unabated. That is my assurance to the people of Accra and indeed the whole nation that the people’s capital is ever safe than before… last week we had three or four days of severe rains and the city was able to withstand the circumstances and the aftermath of the rains… we will be very steadfast in our monitoring of the environment to ensure that we do not allow people to build in our waterways. “
NPA gives Korle Bu GHC 1m to refurbish burns unit
Meanwhile the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has committed one million ghana cedis to refurbish the burns unit at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
The Chief Executive of the Authority, Moses Asaga said the move will ensure the hospital is fully prepared for any national emergencies such as the June 3 disaster that might occur in the future.
Mr. Asaga said the NPA has also suspended its upcoming 10th anniversary to solidarise with families of both survivors and victims of the disaster.
“To solidarise with the situation that happened on June 3, the National Petroleum Authority has committed approximately 1 million cedis to refurbish the burns unit in Korle Bu so that into the future when we get burnt, at least we will get a place for treatment. Also to solidarise with the June 3, the NPA which should have been celebrating its 10th anniversary in pageantry has also suspended that celebration and is committing the funds for the celebration of the June 3 memorial service.”
