The University of Ghana Student’s Representative Council (SRC), has demanded that government issue a directive to stop the management of the University of Ghana from implementing its newly proposed utility charges for students.
The management of the University of Ghana, from the forthcoming academic year, is set to bill undergraduate students of the school over GHc 2,000 for utility services.
[contextly_sidebar id=”HZvzm54OHAdSrx0BBHoR8m8CzJZpS3DD”]The proposed fees for water and electricity have been pegged at GHc 922 non-resident students and GHc 2,326 for residential students respectively.
These new fees are reported to be part of measures being considered by the university to clear its debts owed the utility companies.
The proposed fees are however yet to be approved by the Ghana Education Service (GES), and Ministry of Education, but the SRC maintains that the proposed bills should not even be considered.
Students will not pay for utilties
Addressing a news conference today [Tuesday], the SRC President of the University of Ghana, Esinam Afi Seade, insisted that the students will not pay the amounts being considered.
According to her, “the SRC is standing firm and saying students are not in a position to do this so as much as possible, we will stand by students and kick against the payment of the utility bills.”
Ms. Seade and her council, have thus asked government to issue “a directive to all stakeholders, namely the Electricity Company of Ghana, Ghana Water Company Limited and the University of Ghana management, asking that students are spared the proposed charges.”
The SRC President also admonished “parents, civil society organisations, students unions and the general public, to stand by the students of the University of Ghana SRC, to vehemently avert this unwarranted charges on students.”
“We further call on all students of the University of Ghana to remain calm as the SRC will not succumb to any policy decision to the detriment of student welfare,” she added.
