The Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, had his campaign drive for the 2016 November polls boosted with a donation of Ghc200,000 from some spare parts dealers at the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Market at Kaneshie in Accra.
Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who is touring parts of Accra in a bid to woo the electorate to return the NPP to power in this year’s election, took his visit to the business hub where the crowd gave him a rousing welcome.
According to Citi FM’s Sammi Wiafe who has been covering the tour, a group calling itself ‘Volunteers for Nana Addo’, made up of Abossey Okine Spare Parts Dealers, donated GH¢200,000 towards the NPP flagbearer’s campaign.
He reported that Nana Akufo-Addo held a mini rally at the Abossey Okine Spare Parts market, where he addressed hundreds of NPP supporters and entreated them to vote massively for the party in the November 7 polls.
NPP’s ‘Donate for Change’ campaign
In a bid to generate enough resources for the upcoming polls, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) launched the ‘Donate for change’ campaign aimed at soliciting for funds.
According to the party, they have resorted to this strategy of raising funds because all their funds for the election cannot come from one source so they saw it fit to widen their funding network with more innovation.
Kayayei (Head porters) donate to NPP
One of the more notable donors to Nana Addo’s campaign was a group of head porters, locally referred to as ‘Kayayei’, in the Kumasi Metropolis, who donated an amount of Ghc5,000 to the NPP, at a Fund Raising event held at the Babayara Sports Stadium.
The head porters mostly from Northern Ghana, presented the cash as an association to support the party’s campaign ahead of the November polls.
According to the association, they donated the money to ensure Nana Addo does not go around begging for money to become President.
