Award-winning actress, Joselyn Dumas, who plays the lead role in Shirley Frimpong-Manso’s new political drama series, Shampaign, believes that she has played her part as a woman in politics well.
Joselyn; who plays the role of a single mother who works tirelessly with a young political campaign team in a bid to get elected as the first female president of the country; says that although she has never been a politician, she has played her part well.
Speaking to Citi Showbiz, the award-winning actress described her role as not only having been challenging, but equally interesting.
“I obviously haven’t been a politician before, but I had to [play the part correctly], not [as though] I was just acting or [portraying a] fictional character. You have to portray the part, as [closely to reality] as you can. It was interesting and very challenging, but I loved it. I think that I represented every woman, be it a politician or a regular market woman, or any woman out there who is trying to make a change. I think that I portrayed the strong black African woman”.
On politics in Ghana, Joselyn Dumas says that there is more to it than we would usually see and that she likes the fact that the writer of Shampaign, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, has used the series to open our eyes to the happenings behind the scenes.
“There is so much sham in a lot of campaigns that we don’t even see. So, I like the fact that the writer is throwing light on the fact that if you see Obama giving a very nice speech, it [might] not really [have been] Obama who wrote it. There are a group of relentless people out there, routing to make sure it looks [and sounds] good. All of these people [are] working around the clock.”
Episodes 5 and 6 of Shampaign will remain on the screens of the Silverbird Cinemas, until Thursday, May 12, 2016 and for the next four weeks, or so, two brand new episodes shall be premiered every Friday and will run for the entire week that follows their premier at the Silverbird Cinemas.
The authentically Ghanaian series stars Joselyn Dumas, J.O.T Agyeman, Blossom Chukwujekwu, Nana Aba Anamoah, John Dumelo, Fred Amugi, Zynnell Zuh, Akorfa Adjeani-Asiedu, Anima Amisa Amoah, as well as many other stellar talents.
