The Customs division of the Ghana Revenue Authority has said it has increased surveillance at the country’s borders to reduce smuggling of goods into the country.
According to the agency, the porous state of Ghana’s borders is facilitating the activities of smugglers.
[contextly_sidebar id=”pOpXgPKiVFkLQLTU8WGjaVcHJWSvDAqi”]The Deputy Commissioner in charge of post clearance audit at the customs division of the GRA, Isaac Crentsil, told Citi News new strategies have been adopted to fight the canker.
“The intelligence we are picking is that smuggling is on the ascendency especially at the western and the frontier.”
He said for this reason, “the commissioner of Customs has given a strong warning to officers that anybody who helps a smuggler will be put on disciplinary process. He means whatever he is saying because a lot of surveillance team has also been put up there to check these nefarious activities.”
With the smugglers arrested, he said their goods will be seized and when you are ready to pay the appropriate duty, “you will pay 300% on it.”
