The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of diverting state vehicles for the use of their campaign ahead of this year’s election.
The NPP says the vehicles, which were intended for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), were diverted to the residence of the National Security Advisor, Baba Kamara.
[contextly_sidebar id=”0uibTm9jnGJ3FMsivJTnKaLjwsgLDPCd”]The circulation of photos of the vehicles which were allegedly procured for the NCCE, but were being re-branded to aid the NDC’s election campaign, led to the arrest of the Managing Director of Granite and Marbles, Dr. Edmund Ayo Ani, who was alleged to have circulated the pictures.
Dr. Ani was picked up by the Police last Friday with two others, and handed over to the BNI for their involvement in the circulation of the photos.
Addressing a news conference on Tuesday, Director of Communications for the NPP, Nana Akomea demanded that the NDC and President Mahama release the vehicles back to the NCCE.
“The story was that, these pickups were meant for the use of the National Commission for Civic Education but have been commandeered by the NDC for their election campaign.”
The NPP stated that even though the story of the diversion was not verified by the NCCE, Government’s actions after the allegation gave credence to the reports.
Mr. Akomea also referenced what he described as the strange video showing the pickups being transported under heavy police guard early in the morning.
“Even more strangely, footage emerged that the pickups were driven at dawn under heavy police cover including the blocking of that part of the Spintex Road.”
Although government has not directly commented on the reports of the diversion, the NDC’s National Organizer, Kofi Adams, says the cars belong to the party and not the NCCE as suggested.
