The Electoral Commission’s (EC) limited voters’ registration exercise will take off across various registration centres today [ Thursday], April 28, to May 8.

The exercise, which is one of the major events ahead of the elections on November 7, seeks to register persons who have turned 18, as well as first time voters.

About 1.2 million people to register

The Chairperson of the EC, Charlotte Osei, has revealed that the Commission is expecting to register about  1.2 million people.

[contextly_sidebar id=”d8OJg3A9IAXQ2CfEvgUWj0q24HT2wMNh”]Charlotte Osei revealed this at the launch of the Commission’s new logo and five-year strategic plan at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Accra on Tuesday.

“We are expecting to register about 1.2 million people, that is the maximum. On average , if we get good turnout, we should be looking at 38 people per registration centre per day,” she said.

All is set for the exercise

Mrs. Osei said the commission is also fully prepared for the exercise and has dispatched the  needed logistics across the country.

“We are pretty well prepared and we are confident that it will be successful. We have deliberately structured it so that during the two week period, we’ve captured about three weekends so that for people who have to go to work, it gives them as much time as possible over the weekend and it won’t be affected by people having to go to work.”

While expressing the hope that people will patronize the registration centres early, she reiterated that the exercise is only open to those who could not, and did not, register in the last open registration, adding that it is not an avenue for already registered voters to replace lost voter ID Cards, or to transfer vote from one constituency to another.
