The Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has hinted that government under his party would scrap duties on the importation of raw materials and manufacturing equipment for local businesses.
Dr. Bawumia, who underscored the need to support local businesses and encourage productivity in the country, said discarding import duties will stimulate growth of the private sector.
[contextly_sidebar id=”rbLwfdbG7t8HgSZu89SSMtla2cf4N08I”]He said the current situation where businesses are hugely taxed for importing raw materials into the country, is suffocating industries, adding that an NPP administration would initiate tax incentives to support local businesses.
“Under the NPP in our first budget, we are abolishing all import duties on raw materials into production. We want to encourage production so if our businesses and friends can source raw materials elsewhere for cheap production so that they export and make money, we would support them. When they make money and employ people, we would get tax revenue from income taxes and cooperate taxes”.
Dr. Bawumia was speaking at a mini-rally organized for students in the Ho Municipality as part of his tour of the Volta Region.
The NPP Vice Presidential Candidate is on a two-week tour of the region addressing students.
We’ll restore teacher trainee allowances
While speaking to students of the St. Francis College of Education in Hohoe, Dr. Bawumia reiterated his party’s resolve to restore allowances to teacher and nursing trainees, saying that is non-negotiable.
“There is one assurance I want to leave you…we will restore teacher and nursing training allowances. For us, this is non-negotiable. It is a priority as a government of Nana Addo-Dunkwa Akufo-Addo and in the very first budget in the year 2017, we will restore teacher and nursing training allowances,” Dr. Bawumia added.
