The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah, who has been in the news after it emerged that his step-daughter, Ramona Wampah, is married to the suspected British drug lord arrested in Ghana, is under pressure again from some residents of Nkoranza in the Brong Ahafo Region, whose investments are locked up with defunct microfinance firm, DKM.
A group calling itself the Concerned Nkoranza Youth Association, has in the latest show of anger at the BoG which regulates the country’s financial sector, invoked curses on the Governor for what they describe as his laid-back attitude in facilitating the repayment of their investments.
[contextly_sidebar id=”SlU143GQL1GrjIMg7LAy1k8IyRGlAEjg”]The youth say they are angered by the fact that the BoG failed in its supervision role thereby allowing hundreds of Ghanaians to lose their investment to DKM. During his recent state of the Nations’ address, President Mahama also blamed the Central Bank for the loss of customers’ revenue.
Invoking the curses using the gods of Nkoranza, the leader of the group, Nana Nyarko, indicated that all those involved in the locking up of their monies at the Bank of Ghana should be killed by the deities.
“We are sacrificing this sheep to you. Anyone who doesn’t want Nkoranzaman to have peace because of the monies locked up at the Bank of Ghana should suffer the same fate we are facing.”
Some unnamed politicians and other leaders where not spared either as they also received some share of the curses by Nana Nyarko.
“We invoke your wrath on the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Henry Kofi Wampah, all leaders and politicians who have a hand in the locking up in our investments at the Bank of Ghana. Do not let them rest until we have our monies.”
Nana Nyarko lamented that they have used all other means to retrieve their monies hence their decision to now invoke the deity.
“We have done all we need to do to retrieve our monies but to no avail. If Henry Kofi Wampah is laid-back in getting our money for us, then Nananom, please deal with him and all leaders who have a hand this issue.”
It is however unclear whether the curses invoked would have any effect on the governor and his accomplices.
The DKM saga
DKM, a micro-finance company, is alleged to have enticed its depositors, mostly farmers in the rural areas, with attractive interest rates and diverted an amount of GHc77.2 million of the deposits to run its subsidiary companies.
The company, which has branches in Wenchi, Techiman, Bolgatanga, Wa, Berekum, and Nkoranza, has invested the deposits its customers in DKM Airline Company, DKM Fuel Station, DKM Transport, DKM Shea Butter Company, DKM Mining Company, among others.
As a result, the BoG has revoked the license of DKM and had commenced the process of liquidating the assets of the company to pay off the depositors, although the process can take several months and years.
