The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has finally distributed some relief items to victims of a rainstorm which hit some communities in the Yendi Municipality of the Northern Region three weeks ago.
Over 900 hundred people were displaced with the worst affected communities being Gundogu and Guntingli outskirts Yendi Township.
The first consignment included 80 pockets of roofing sheets, five bales of blankets, 300 pieces of plastic plates and an equal quantity of plastic cups, 50 pieces of plastic basins, 100 pieces of plastic buckets and four bales of mosquito nets.
The Deputy Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji A. B. A Fuseini, supervised the distribution exercise and pledged government’s enough support to alleviate their plight.
He said government was touched by the plight of the people following the disaster, hence their response with the first consignment from NADMO in conjunction with the Yendi Municipal Assembly.
Alhaji A. B. A Fuseini urged residents of the affected communities to incorporate tree planting into their building plans.
This, according to him will serve as windbreaks to mitigate the impact of future disasters.
The Sagnarigu constituency legislator cautioned NADMO officers in charge of the distribution against favoritism.
He further relayed government’s commitment to changing the lives of Ghanaians regardless of their geographical locations and reechoed the need for peaceful coexistence especially in the Yendi Municipality.
The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive , Alhaji Issah Zakaria assured the victims of additional relief items to alleviate their plight.
He said though the assembly was bedeviled with myriad challenges, enough resources would be allocated for their upkeep.
Alhaji Zakaria commended some of the affected landlords for re-roofing their buildings ahead of government’s support.
Yendi Municipal NADMO Officer, Bigah Kofi appealed to philanthropists, Non Governmental Organizations and civil society organizations to support the victims.
He appreciated government’s response but concluded that the relief items were inadequate taking cognizance of the impact of the disaster.
Bigah Kofi gave the assurance that the relief items would be equally distributed to the victims.
