The Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded 14 scholarships to the wards of martyrs of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The ceremony for presenting the awards to these young people was held at the Burma Camp on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Ali Halabi, hailed the efforts of the Ghana’s security forces to maintain peace in the country and beyond.
“We are aware that the peace Ghana prides herself of enjoying is through the effort of the security services… Ghana has not been selfish. Even in war torn areas outside the country, Ghanaian soldiers can be found breaking sweat and even losing their lives or remaining forever maimed just to maintain order,” he said.
At the ceremony was the Minister of Defence, Dr. Benjamin Kumbour, the Chief of Defense Staff Air Vice Marshal Michael Samson-Oye and some members of the Lebanese community.
In his speech, the Chief of Defense Staff highlighted the support that the Lebanese community in Ghana provides for the dependents and families of these martyrs and thanked the community for the aid.
“The support of the Lebanese community to education in general is very appreciated, specifically the support of the Lebanese community to the dependents and families of martyrs is worthy of note.”
“It is interesting to note that the Lebanese community does not only support the dependents of martyrs of the Ghana Armed Forces but they extend such support to beneficiaries from the Police, Immigration and the Prison Services. By so doing, the community is contributing to strengthening security in the country. Ghana is thankful for the gesture.”
This is the second year that the Lebanese community in Ghana has awarded scholarships to these dependents of martyrs.
In all, the community has awarded over 150 scholarships to some students in universities across the country.
