Executive Director of the Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA), Afi Yakubu, has lauded SEND-Ghana’s peace animators’ project.
More than hundred community volunteers in some selected identified hotspots in the Eastern Corridor of the Northern Region, have been empowered to serve as peace ambassadors ahead of the November polls.
Their task is to detect early warning signals and report to the appropriate law enforcement agencies for rapid response.
As a lead trainer, Afi Yakubu at the climax of a five-day capacity building workshop in Zabzugu, said the project’s implementation was appropriate.
She related it’s suitability to the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections as well as the emergence of terrorist attacks around the globe.
Afi Yakubu appreciated the caliber of peace animators and implored them to prove their worth.
She further encouraged them to augment the operations of law enforcement agencies to prevent conflicts.
On the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, she advised the major stakeholders to uphold the principle of free, fair, transparent and peaceful elections.
She also decried child trafficking which is pervasive in the Eastern Corridor and admonished the peace animators to expose the traffickers and their accomplices.
SEND-Ghana’s Programmes Director in charge of livelihood and food security, Raymond Avatim, said the workshop empowered the peace animators to help keep conflict surveillance in 66 identified hotspots in the Eastern Corridor.
He commended the participants for improving their skills and living up to the task.
He said SEND Ghana considered the 2016 general elections as very crucial, hence the project’s implementation.
Raymond Avatim called for deeper collaboration between the law enforcement agencies, the district assemblies, traditional rulers and the peace animators.
Some of the beneficiaries narrated the essence of the project in their communities and thanked SEND Ghana.
The peace animators’ project is sponsored by the Global Affairs Canada as part of SEND Ghana’s Food Security through Cooperative in Northern Ghana (FOSTERING) programme.
