The Ekumfi Essuohyia Police station in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region, has been turned into a block factory.
The abandoned Police station was built in 2006 in the erstwhile Kufour administration.
Although it was reportedly captured in President Mahama’s ‘Accounting to the people’ brochure, it is being used as a block factory. Supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area have thus questioned why the government captured a project initiated under the NPP government as part of its achievements.
When Citi News visited the site, the front-view had heaps of sand and stones .
The Police Station is located opposite the Pacific Oil station along the Accra -Cape Coast main road.
The rooms were full of cement papers, iron rods and other building materials. The back of the building has also been taken over by grass.
DCE caused arrest of teacher over the project
The abandoned Police station was one of the reasons the former Presiding Member and a teacher at Otabanadzie, Daniel Hammond, was arrested for allegedly insulting the DCE, Ibrahim Dawson.
The teacher reportedly complained about the abandoned Police station which has also become a defecation site.
The contractor, who built the Police station and handed it over to the Assembly in 2006, is the same person allegedly operating the block factory.
The Mankessim Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Ahlija in an interview with Citi News, said they are aware the Police Station has been handed over to the District Assembly but the Police Command has not been asked to take over the building.
He added that he would meet the DCE to stop the one molding blocks there. Mr. Ibrahim Dawson, the DCE of Ekumfi in an interview with Citi News, said they will soon renovate the project and hold an official ceremony to hand it over to the Police.
No District Command
The Ekumfi area does not have a District Police Command and the project was expected to serve that purpose.
Ekumfi, worst Developed District in Central Region
The Ekumfi District was in the 2014 District League table named as the worst developed in the Central Region.
The District scored 26 percent and ranked 20th in the region and 215th out of the total districts of 216 at the national level, which was far below the national standard for development.
