The Ministry of Gender and Social Protection, will by the end of 2016, register 170,000 children onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The sector Minister Nana Oye Lithur, announced this on the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations 54th Commission for Social Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

She said collaborations of this nature with stakeholders, have helped in the development of social intervention programs by the government.

The Minister said the partnership with the NHIA is because “we believe in access to health as a human right for the vulnerable groups  under our mandate that we are suppose to take care of.”

In 2015, the Ministry in collaboration with the NHIA registered over twelve thousand vulnerable people.

She said “For the first time in the history of our country, we registered over twelve thousand people who are above 65 on the NHIS, and the seven thousand prison inmates and cured lepers.”

The Minister explained that the registration will cover basic school children who benefit from the school feeding program.

She said they will collaborate with Ministry of Education to help with the registration of the children.

She indicated that the ministry is also “collaborating with the IFC to register 7,000 extremely poor persons on the scheme, adding all these initiatives will go a long way to improve the standard of living for the beneficiaries.
