Bridge Development Network, an NGO, working in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem Municipality of the Central Region of Ghana donated 1047 books to 7 basic schools in Komenda, Kissi, and Dompoase within the Municipality.
The books are part of supplementary readers received from Books2Africa International, based in the United Kingdom. The donation forms part of activities under a project imitated by the NGO known as “A Reader is a Leader”.
Besides the schools, a donation of 15 nursing, and medical text book was made to Martin Essah; a degree nursing student at the University of Cape Coast for his private library. Donations to Ayensudo and Brenu Akyinim schools are planned to happen shortly.
The Aldersgate Methodist School, Komenda M/A JHS ‘A’, Komenda M/A Primary A&B School, Komenda M/A JHS ‘B’ school and Ghasel Primary School within Komenda received a total of 777 books, whereas the Kissi M/A Primary and JHS received 155 books. Additionally, the Dompoase-Kokwaado M/A Primary & JHS also received 100 books.
Like most school pupils outside the cities, pupils in the KEEA Municipality do not have access to libraries in their communities, and this unfortunate situation hinder their ability to get reading materials in their communities/homes to read.
In some instances, reading material in the schools is woefully inadequate to stimulate the desire of children to read more.
Consequently, “A Reader, Is a Leader” Project was fashioned to encourage school children between the ages of 3 and 16 years to cultivate the habit of reading.
The district directorate of education has approved of the efforts of the NGO and promised to support their activities in this regard.
The expected outcomes of the project is that, the school children will be able to build a strong vocabulary bank, improve their reading skills, improve their diction, cultivate the habit of reading, and acquire more knowledge from reading, which will help transform them into great future leaders.
For sustainability, feedback forms were distributed to head teachers of beneficiary schools to help evaluate the project in the next academic term.
Bridge Development Network undertakes projects in communities, to enhance the total quality of life for all people in all spheres.
These projects/programs are in areas of water access, sanitation and hygiene, health, education and training, women and children issues, disability, poverty alleviation, and other social intervention programs.
