The Ashanti Regional Police have commenced investigations into the death of a 30-year-old police officer who was shot when the vehicle he was travelling in was attacked by robbers.
The robbery happened on the Ejura-Atebubu portion of the Kumasi-Yeji highway.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Police, ASP Yusif Tanko, told Citi News that the police have started investigating the incident.
“The police at Ejura and Mampong are working together with the communities to ensure that the robbers are tracked down. Measures have been instituted to be able to reach them and have them arrested,” he said.
ASP Tanko also explained that the robbers shot the officer after he tried to take back some of the money that the robbers had taken from him.
“What we heard from eye witnesses is that when the vehicle he was travelling in was stopped, the robbers ordered everybody to bring out their money. He brought out his money and when they were ordered to lie down, he took some of the money back.
There were three robbers, with one of them in the bush. This particular robber saw Alexander Kyeremeh, the deceased, keep the money in his underwear. He came out of the bush, took the money and shot the officer at close range.”
The body of Lance Corporal has been deposited at the Asante Mampong District Hospital Morgue
