The Cocoa Processing Company Limited, manufacturers of chocolate and other cocoa products in Ghana has shut down two of its three factories at Tema.
According to a letter from the company to its staff, the shutdown took effect from Monday, January 25, 2016.
“Due to operational challenges, Management has decided to temporarily shut down the two Cocoa Factories from Monday 25th January, 2016, until further notice.”
The letter further directed the staff of the affected departments to stay home during the period of the shutdown.
“Management has therefore decided that staff of the Cocoa factories should stay at home as part of their annual leave with effect from 25th January, 2016 while the factories remain shut down,” the letter added.
It is unclear why the company had to take such drastic measures in the wake of high cost of electricity and petroleum products.
There are reports that the company shut down the factories because of lack of cocoa beans but management of the company has discounted the claim citing maintenance works on their machines.
