Owners of the lands hosting the University of Health and Allied Sciences at Sokode near Ho in the Volta Region, are threatening to demonstrate on Wednesday following government’s failure to pay them compensation for lands acquired for the establishment of the university.
They expressed shock that their compensation packages were not captured in the 2016 budget.
[contextly_sidebar id=”kxW8utUXSuL851wPuXOUF9jWXU0CCYVO”]At a press conference in Ho, the group said despite an earlier promise by the Volta Regional Minister, Helen Adwoa Ntoso, to make provisions for the payment of the compensation due them in the 2016 National Budget, the budget read last Friday did not capture that.
“The Regional Minister promised that the compensation owed the University of Health and Allied Sciences Land Owners Association, Volta Region, would be added to provisions in the 2016 National Budget. Recently, the 2016 National Budget statement was made public without any mention of the University of Health and Allied Sciences Land Owners Association’s compensation.”
The landowners explain that this contravenes the provisions made in Article 20(2) of the 1992 Constitution which mandates prompt payments of compensation for compulsory acquisition of land by the state.
The Chairman of the Association, Benoni Glalah said the protest would be organized in Ho on Wednesday to drum home their demands.
