The Minister of Finance, Seth Terkper, says government’s intention to review the current book and research allowance system is on course.

University and Polytechnic lecturers have embarked on several strike over the non payment of their book and research allowance.

[contextly_sidebar id=”BIqp0W5wnKQ4LZJoCGFlv0AfjVBeq2Lc”]The Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana (AMJG) in 2014, reminded government to pay its members their fuel and book/research allowances which had been in arrears for seven and two years, respectively.

Presenting the 2016 budget, the Minister said the payment of same allowance across board for lecturers will be replaced with the Tertiary Education Research Fund, where lecturers will apply for monies to conduct proper research work.

He said a draft bill for the establishment of the Fund is before Cabinet and will soon be laid before Parliament

“In order to encourage and support research in tertiary institutions government is reviewing the system of payment of Book and Research allowances to replace it with the Tertiary Education Research Fund. To this end, a draft bill for the establishment of the Tertiary Education Research Fund is before Cabinet and will soon be laid in Parliament.”

Free SHS

The Minister also revealed government had secured funding for 320, 488 day students to commence the free SHS programme.

He said the country is on course to provide 200 community day high schools.
