Consul General of Sweden to Ghana, Amarkai Amarteifio, has urged the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), to provide knowledge and guidance to people given positions in the area of sports administration to enable them succeed in their duties.
He said that the lack of information and knowledge of the domain has often left appointees in difficulty leading to changes in some of these areas such as the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
He made this call at the 40th MTN Sports Writers Association of Ghana Awards Ceremony held in Accra at the Banquet Hall of the State House of which he was the Guest Speaker.
“Members of this association should remain focused on their role as important partners in the promotion and development of sports. This will be done by making available expertise and knowledge to sports administrators particularly political appointees who sometimes come into sports governance without any previous experience in sports.”
“This will ensure the stability of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and also reduce the casualty rate in that Ministry.” He added. The objectivity and sincerity of sports journalists in offering good advice and candid criticism will make them worthy partners in sports administration and will them the respect and trust of the other partners,” he added.
Amarkei Amarteifio, who was once a Sports Minister and head of the Ghana Boxing Authority, further called on SWAG to build a library in order to conduct research and develop more efficient record keeping.
He said such move is a way of strengthening SWAG’s institutional memory in the administration of sports in Ghana.
The top award of the ceremony, the SWAG Sportsperson of the Year, went to Harrison Afful who beat Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan and fellow Stars player Andre Ayew.
