The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has given indication it may reconsider its stance on the need for a new voter’s register.
[contextly_sidebar id=”dkiAxkz8oyxs1F9siKeP7D4wRVkyHIv8″]The opposition New Patriotic Party has presented a petition to the Electoral Commission (EC) over a new electoral register.
They claim the current voters’ register is bloated and lacks credibility to be used for further elections.
The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia practically rubbished most of the claims cited by the opposition NPP as evidence that the current voters’ register is bloated.
According to him, claims by the NPP that close to 80,000 Togolese nationals, minors are in the current register are are questionable.
But speaking in an interview with Citi News, National Chairman of the NDC Kofi Portuphy discouraged what he described as unnecessary fear and panic created by some quarters.
He however added that the party may agree to the compilation of a new voters register if it is backed by a superior argument.
“We may at the end of the day agree to have a new register but we will look at the circumstances, whether we have gone by the laws that govern the registration, exhibition of the register, voting, etc, you and I know that at a polling station when you are registering you have the opportunity to challenge all forms of illegalities including under aged, non Ghanaians, among others,” Mr. Portuphy said.
