Black Stars and Columbus Crew wing back Harrison Afful was awarded the SWAG footballer of the year ahead of Andre Ayew and Asamoah Gyan at the Awards Ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of the State House.
The award was given based on his performances for former club side Esperance of Tunisia which saw him feature in the finals of the CAF Champiuons league on 3 separate occasions between 2011 and 2014.

Afful is expected to feature in Ghana’s team when they take on Canada in Washington DC in an international friendly on October 13th. Richard Commey named Boxer of the year
Boxer, Richard Commey was rewarded for his exploits after a stellar couple of years saw him win the African Boxing Union Lightweight title and the Commonwealth Light title – where he defeated Gary Buckland – in 2013 and 2014 respectively.
The athletes were awarded for their performances in the 2013-2014 sporting year after last year’s ceremony was not held due to some challenges.
Other Awards on the night
Young long distance runner Martha Bissah picked up the Athlete of the year award for her work done in the 2013/2014 season culminating in a gold medal at the youth Olympics, Ghana’s first at any level.
Augustine Okrah of Al Merriekh was also recognized as the SWAG Premier League MVP for work he did playing for Berekum Chelsea in the 2013/2014 football league season which saw him score 16 goals.
Kumasi Asante Kotoko who who claimed a league and FA Cup double in 2014 were adjudged the club of the year.
Jennifer Cudjoe was given the award for the female footballer of the year
Sharon Aquaye was also named the promising star for the year under review for her exploits in Taekwondo.
The ceremony on Saturday night included speeches from the Guest of Honour Hon. Amarkai Amarteifio and the Sports Minister, Dr. Mustapha Ahmed.
