Over 600 students are expected to take part in this year’s Spelling Bee competition.
The start of the competition follows the training of the students in topics such as spelling rules, roots words or words origins between April and September this year.
This year’s competition which marks the 9th edition is on the theme, “The Importance of Co-Curricular activities in Education”.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s competition, the country director of Young Educators Foundation, organizers of the competition, Eugenia Tachie-Menson appealed for the program to be counted as part of the contact hours of students in school,
“The Spelling Bee is a learning experience outside of the classroom, where lessons in English (usually taught in the classroom) are learnt. As such, we call on the Ghana Education Service and her allies to consider making co-curricular activities such as The Spelling Bee count in terms of the contact hours spent teaching our children”.
The Deputy Divisional Director of Basic Education Division, at the Ghana Education Service, Mrs. Margaret Okai who was the guest speaker for the launch, assured the organizers and guests present of the GES’s continued support for the competition.
In his address, the 2015 National Champion, Vishal Thakwani, stressed on how helpful and important The Spelling Bee has been to him, adding that he had become a more confident person after being in the Bee for 3 years.
He encouraged this year’s spellers to persevere. He ended with a quote from Dr. Abdul Kalam, “Let difficulties know that you too are difficult.”

The Spelling Bee continues with community bee and regional competitions as the train travels across the length and breadth of the country, on a quest to unearth the nation’s best ‘Speller-brities’. This will be crowned with the National Finals in February 2016.
