Ghanaian league champions AshantiGold won another trophy in the season when they beat Asante Kotoko 3-1 in the Otumfuo Cup played at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday.
The match was played to honour the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II but the contest was far from friendly as the two teams went for goals from the beginning.
But it was Miners who hit paydirt first when they scored in the 15th minute through Tijani Joshua. Five minutes later, Safiu Mumuni got AshGold’s second of the day when he profited from some poor defending on Kotoko’s part to score and put AshGold in a comfortable space at half time.
[contextly_sidebar id=”2SQDYl1gkysf5j8TNAfshlHTquvCHYiM”]Kotoko played better after the break with Stephen Oduro guiding the team from midfield and on 85 minutes, they scored through Obed Owusu.
But their momentum was broken when Eric Opoku pressed Kotoko goalie Joseph Addo into an error and went on to score the third for the Miners.
The result leaves Kotoko trophyless this season while AshantiGold add the Otumfuo Cup to the 2014/2015 First Capital Plus Premier League title.
