A former presidential candidate of the People`s National Convention, PNC, Dr. Edward Mahama has attributed the current strike by the Ghana Medical Association to what he describes as an institutional failure.
[contextly_sidebar id=”Qm4mKdn8Heypv1iu3174NjgckHOYuLhn”]According to him, state institutions mandated to resolve grievances of such nature have not been proactive enough.
Doctors working in public health facilities are currently on strike over the lack of conditions of service from government.
Their action has led to the suspension of services to Out-Patient Departments (OPDs) however; in-patients and emergency cases are still being attended to.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News, Dr. Edward Mahama challenged government to strengthen state institutions tasked to resolve issues of conditions of services to enable them to work efficiently to avert such occurrences in the future.
“We need to revamp our systems and institutions such that we don’t go through these perennial strikes…why do we wait to get to the situation where the strike action is the only action that we will react to?…it’s an institutional problem and governments and doctors both get blamed,” he said.
