Normally, when you read a guide on how to live longer, Tip One is usually ‘Give up booze and fags.’

While giving them up WILL extend your lifespan, we’ve focused on other, less obvious lifestyle changes which have been proven by scientific studies to extend life.

Many scientists believe that people born today will live well past 100 – and some believe that the first children to live to 150 will already have been born.

1) Eat spicy food

A study of 490,000 participants from the China Kadoorie Biobank, found that people who ate spicy food two days per week had a 10% reduced risk of death.

2) Go to church

A study of 4,000 North Carolina residents found that people who went to church regularly were less likely to die in a given time period than those who didn’t.

3) Keep studying

Educated people live longer. A study of US census records from 1989 and 1990 found that there was a correlation between leaving school young and an increased risk of death.

Mouse studies have shown that restricting calorie intake can extend life, and a recent primate study at Wisconsin National Primate Research Center in Madison found that monkeys who ate less lived longer.

5) Get married

Large studies have shown that married people are less likely to die of heart disease and other age-related ailments, and a Harvard study suggests that married people are more likely to detect cancers in their early stages.

6) Get rid of stress

Research published in the British Medical Journal in 2012 found that stress led to an increase of 20% in the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

7) Be optimistic

A large-scale study of 97,253 post-menopausal women in America, published in the journal Circulation, found that optimistic people had reduced risk of coronary heart disease and cancer.

8) Believe you are young

A recent University College London study found that people who believed they were young actually tended to live longer.

9) Don’t sit down all day

Being sedentary is the worst thing you can do.  A 2011 study found that each hour watching TV after the age of 25 takes 22 minutes off your life.

10) Meditate

A 2005 study published in Journal of Cardiology found that people who meditated had a lowered risk of death from cancer and heart disease.
