A Spanish town plagued by pigeons is feeding the birds grain spiked with contraceptives to cull the population.
Officials in picturesque Badia del Valles, near Barcelona, say the thousands of pigeons are driving away tourists.
A town hall spokesman said one pair of birds can produce 48 pigeons a year, leading to a massive overpopulation of the species.
Three grain dispensers have now been installed on rooftops which issue feed dosed with the drug Nicarbazin, which acts as a contraceptive for the birds.
Badia officials hope that 80 per cent of the town’s pigeons will have been eliminated within four to five years.
