Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has defended his decision to openly campaign for the Member of Parliament for the Tema West constituency, Irene Naa Toshie Addo ahead of the July 25  Parliamentary primary.

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie also known as Sir John has been spotted with some incumbent MPs campaigning for the Deputy Minority Chief Whip to be retained as the party’s candidate for the 2016 election.

[contextly_sidebar id=”SxnhlID5egknHl3VvtCQsK5A9MP68EEV”]Supporters of one of the aspirant, Carlos Ahenkrah have expressed reservation about the actions of Sir John and the MPs saying, it is unacceptable.

However speaking to Citi News, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie said Irene Naa Toshie Addo remains the party’s best bet in the constituency for the 2016 elections.

“Having a government achievement over the years, I have no doubt at all that given the nod, she will be a very very good representative. This is my belief and this is why I felt sad and I needed to go and support her candidature. The others who are complaining are being supported by heavy weights. Some of them have given monetary compensation to the women so I was surprised they were complaining.I believe that she will be an excellent Member of Parliament- a lady who has beaten Ofosu Ampofo in the last elections.”

In a related development, Naa Torshie’s contender, Mr Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, has called on losing candidates in the just-ended NPP parliamentary primaries to accept the wave of change that has hit most of the major constituencies nationwide.

According to him, while many of the sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) lost the primaries, their experience will be useful in the party’s campaign for the 2016 polls.

He commended the delegates, describing them as having showed maturity and a good sense of patriotism.
