Instagram users on Android: Making your own photo collages just got easier.
The photo service is finally making Layout, its standalone app for custom collages, available to Android users. The company also updated its main Android app Tuesday with a new photo-editing tool called Structure.
Layout pulls in photos from your phone’s camera roll and allows you to make collages with up to nine different images at once. The app includes 10 preset templates; users can customize their layouts with additional in-app editing tools that allow you to flip or make a mirror image of shots in their frames.
You can also shoot photos within the app using the “photo booth” feature, which takes a series of rapid-fire selfies and automatically arranges them into a collage. All collages are automatically cropped into an Instagram-friendly square format, and can be shared to Instagram and Facebook.
Instagram first introduced Layout — its third spin-off app alongside Hyperlapse and Bolt — back in March. Photo collages were already very popular among Instagram’s user base, the company said at the time; introducing its own collage-making service was a good way to increase engagement and keep users in Instagram for longer periods of time.
Android users are also getting a new editing tool in the main Instagram app, which was also updated Tuesday. Structure, available now on Android and “coming soon” to iOS, “brings out details and textures in photos,” according to an Instagram spokesperson.
